The Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking applicants for a 10-week position in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The successful applicant will participate in studies of carbon cycle processes in ocean ecosystems, particularly deep particle flux materials collected in the Oceanic Flux Program (OFP) deep ocean sediment traps in the Sargasso Sea. The REU project will be flexible depending upon the interests and qualifications of the student. Past undergraduate projects have included organic and inorganic chemical and isotopic studies of the flux, and biological studies using image analysis of the seasonality in fluxes of biogenic components of the flux (e.g. calcareous microplankton, aggregates.)

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated aptitude in chemistry and math. Previous lab experience is a plus but not required.

REU positions are available to U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents only who are currently enrolled as undergraduates at U.S. colleges or universities (no graduating seniors).
