Marine Aquarist and Research Internship

Duration: June 1 – July 15th (flexible start date between June 1 – 15th)

Description: The Automated Aquatic Facility (AAF) at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole is hosting one internship position during the summer of 2024. The AAF is a new initiative to generate novel marine model and freshwater model organisms to establish a resource network with MBL at its center. Interns will learn how to maintain novel aquatic systems and the husbandry of a variety of invertebrate species. Interns will also have the opportunity to complete an independent research project under the supervision of AAF staff.  Additional activities may include outreach, electronics design and fabrication, graphic design, and coding.

Responsibilities:

  • Food preparation
  • Daily husbandry tasks and animal welfare checks
  • Aquarium tank and system maintenance (which can include, but is not limited to, filter changes, sock cleaning, water quality testing, and algae scrubs)
  • Literature reviews, writing, data entry, analysis, and creative thinking for independent research projects

Requirements:

  • Dedication to animal care
  • Commitment to entire internship period
  • Educational background in biology, ecology, marine science, engineering, or a related field
  • At least 18-years of age
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • A passion for learning new skills and curiosity for the natural world
