MBL Director Appointed To National Academy Of Sciences | The Falmouth Enterprise

Nipam H. Patel has come a long way from beginning a blossoming butterfly collection, a hobby which began when he was 8 years old.

Dr. Patel, director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole and professor at the University of Chicago, will join the ranks of distinguished scientists in the US National Academy of Sciences next year.

Election to the academy is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science. It is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive.

A member of the academy nominated Dr. Patel this year, and he will be formally inducted at an annual meeting in 2025. Although he could not confirm who nominated him to the academy, (only existing academy members can make a nomination) Dr. Patel knows that scientists from his own field chose to elect him.
